Transfer Workspace Ownership

Overview

As a workspace Owner, you can transfer ownership to another active member of your workspace. This is useful when organizational responsibilities change, or when someone else needs to take over administrative and billing control of the workspace.

Important

Transferring ownership is a significant action. The new owner will gain full administrative and billing control over the workspace. Make sure you understand the consequences before proceeding.


Prerequisites

Before you can transfer ownership:

  • You must be the current Owner of the workspace
  • The target member must be an active member (accepted invitation)
  • The target member must not already be the owner
  • The workspace must have at least one other active member

How to Transfer Ownership

  1. Go to SettingsWorkspace Settings
  2. Scroll down to the Transfer Ownership section (highlighted with a warning border)
  3. Click the Transfer Ownership button
  4. In the dialog, select the new owner from the dropdown list of eligible members
  5. Type TRANSFER in the confirmation field to confirm
  6. Click Confirm

What Happens After Transfer

When ownership is transferred, the following changes take effect immediately:

For the New Owner

  • Receives the Owner role with full permissions
  • Gains access to billing settings and subscription management
  • Becomes responsible for all workspace payments
  • Receives an email notification about the ownership transfer
  • A warning banner is displayed on the Billing page prompting to update the payment method

For the Previous Owner

  • Role is automatically changed to Admin
  • Retains most management capabilities (projects, tasks, team members)
  • Loses access to:
  • Billing settings
  • Subscription management
  • Workspace deletion
  • Further ownership transfers
  • Receives an email notification confirming the transfer

For the Workspace

  • All existing data, projects, time entries, and settings remain unchanged
  • Active subscription and billing cycle continue uninterrupted
  • Team members and their roles (other than the two involved) are not affected

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I undo a transfer?

No. Once ownership is transferred, only the new owner can transfer it back to you.

Does the subscription change?

No. The active subscription plan and billing cycle remain the same. The new owner becomes responsible for future payments. However, the existing payment method still belongs to the previous owner. A warning banner will appear on the Billing page until the new owner adds their own payment method and sets it as default.

What happens to my data?

Nothing changes. All time entries, projects, tasks, and reports remain intact. You retain access to the workspace as an Admin.

Can I transfer to a member who hasn't accepted their invitation yet?

No. The target member must have an active status (fully accepted invitation).

Who can see the Transfer Ownership section?

Only the current workspace Owner can see and access the Transfer Ownership section in Workspace Settings.
